There's also a new restaurant in Burnaby Heights area called Broken Rice. I will have to visit it soon enough as it's been "coming soon" for a while and I like the name. Lets hope more people come to realize that Vietnamese food is not only pho and that there are REALLY strong grilled meat dishes. The rest of the dishes will come later. Some restaurants serve more traditional Vietnamese dishes like Phnom Penh in Vancouver Chinatown.
The decor is really nice. Feels like a rich Vietnamese person house. The low light condition reminds me of afternoons in my uncle's house, when everybody's taking a nap. The bathroom is nice, modern, actually clean (this is about the first viet place that the washroom is so clean).
As some reviewers say, the place is really not yet at full potential, you can see it on the menu which is basically printed pieces of paper, and photocopies of the printed copy, stapled together. Apparently they are still adding more items on the menu. It's a very extensive menu. I'm pretty impressed, will have to try a few more. Good English translations.
I ordered the pork cooked 3 ways on broken rice so to get a good sampling of their foods. So there's a pork chop, pork cake (for my lack of memory, in Vietnamese "Cha") and shredded pork. The pork chop was CRAZY! The most tender pork chop i've ever had in my life, and i've had a lot of pork chops. Its pretty thin and fatty, the seasoning is the standard lemongrass and sugar maybe with other stuff that i dont know about. It is grilled to a medium done cooking. The parts around the bone were slightly pinkish leading me to think that. Parenthesis... why do i hear all the time that you should leave the bone in when grilling meat? for taste, i agree, but some chefs say bone is a good conductor of heat, so how come the least cooked parts of the meat is always against the bone??? I dont buy that theory.
The "Cha" was very fine and soft again. I was impressed at how soft it was. Probably mixed some water in the ground pork. And the shredded pork, great as always, this shredded pork had something extra that most shredded pork i had dont have, it had a bit of a brown shine to it, perhaps some of it was lighting roasted? not too sure but it was good.
I'll be coming back there for sure to try out more of their dishes. Stay tuned for more reviews. Also, if you've been here and had other dishes, please write us!
